Emergency Medical Responder

Program Description

Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs) are an essential part of the foundation of Emergency Medical Services in Canada. EMRs are often associated with volunteer emergency services organizations, and in rural or remote areas may be the sole provider of emergency services in a community. Often termed “first responders”, EMRs may be responsible for initial assessments, the provision of safe and appropriate care, and arranging or providing the safe transport of a patient to the appropriate health-care facility.

SAIT’s EMR training includes emergency medical services, ambulance operations, patient assessment, basic life support, trauma and medical emergencies, geriatrics, environmental, psychological, and special situations.

SAIT’s EMR program combines online-managed self-study of theoretical concepts with mandatory classroom lab days where practical skills are taught and assessed. Students must be motivated and organized to learn the required material through self-directed study and skill practise.

Graduates find work as Emergency Medical Responders in public and private emergency medical service and safety related jobs.

Credentials

Graduates of this program will receive a SAIT Emergency Medical Responder Certificate of Achievement.

Additionally, graduates of this program are considered preferred applicants for the Primary Care Paramedic program at SAIT.

Finally, graduates of this program are eligible to write the Alberta College of Paramedics provincial emergency medical responder (EMR) registration exam.

Accreditation

The SAIT Emergency Medical Responder program is approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP).

Progression

You have up to five years to complete all certificate courses. You must meet the graduation requirements as they exist at the time you register for your first course (see AC.3.1.1 Grading and Progression).

Admission Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate the following in order to be eligible for admission:

At least 18 years of age.
Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s licence with GDL removed.
Possess Standard First Aid certification.
- Applicants are encouraged to complete SAIT course CPRS 006 in order to achieve this certification, though a certificate from the Heart & Stroke Foundation will also be accepted.
The following courses or their equivalents:
- English Language Arts 30-1 or English Language Arts 30-2, AND,
- Pure Math 10 or Math 20-1, or, Applied Math 20 or Math 20-2, AND,
- Biology 30 or Science 30

Applicants who do not have all the high school level requirements will be given opportunities to complete these at SAIT or other institutions.
