General ESL

Description


SAIT offers general English as a Second Language (ESL) courses which provide learners with an opportunity to explore Canadian culture through exciting and engaging activities while acquiring skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Built around a theme-based curriculum, these ESL courses provides learners with opportunities to learn language through topics like community services, commercial services, education, travel and leisure, employment, health and safety, family and relationships, weather, and social services.

Prospective Students


The general English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are designed for international and/or domestic learners of English who have English skills ranging from basic to intermediate, and who have completed high school, university or other post-secondary courses.

Entry Requirements


Each general English as a Second Language course has its own pre-requisite requirements. Please see below for more information.

ENGL 001 General English Communications I: A score of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 1 in all four skill areas: reading, writing, listening and speaking.  Learners may also be accepted into the program with less than CLB 1 if they have completed high school or university level education.

ENGL 002 General English Communications II: Completion of ENGL 001 or a score of CLB 3 in all four skill areas: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

ENGL 003 General English Communications III: Completion of ENGL 002 or a score of CLB 5 in all four skill areas: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Student Success


Student success in the courses depends on the student’s attendance, participation and demonstration of proficiency.  Instructors regularly assess student progress through classroom participation and daily reading, writing, listening and speaking tasks.
