    Course Description:

    Course Description:
    In their work, journalists and communicators are required to make decisions regularly about whom to talk to and use as sources, what information is appropriate to publish, and how to balance the competing demands of public versus private interest. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the practice of ethical decision-making in journalism. Topics to be covered include sourcing practices and issues of personal privacy, manipulation by, and of, the media, censorship and self-censorship, and coverage of civil law proceedings.

  • JOUR 305 - Visual Reportage and Storytelling


    Course Description:
    This course builds on the skills developed from the first two semesters of Visual Journalism courses (PHOT 216 and PHOT 256). The focus of the course will be on photojournalism techniques for reporters, and will include visual reporting for general assignments and events, as well as long form visual storytelling in today’s online news media. The course will include several aspects of photojournalism as it pertains to still photography, and videography, and how these two mediums are combined with other media to tell a story. Proper planning, interviewing techniques, camera handling, audio acquisition, video editing and sequencing will be covered in more detail, with the final assignment to encompass all of the skill sets discussed in this course. Today’s journalist is now tasked with the responsibility of gathering still images, text, audio and video for multiple platforms. Learning how to achieve this balance will be a major focus of this course.

    Course Description:

    Course Description:
    JOUR 356 is entirely tutorial in approach. It completes the learner’s preparation for an entry-level position as a reporter.     Course Description:
    Specialized types of news writing form the basis of this second-year Journalism course. News blogging, editorial writing, opinion writing and column writing are covered, along with editing practice for opinion-based content. The evolving role of opinion articles in journalism will be explored, along with research for opinion writing, critical thinking and the basics of structuring an argument.   • JOUR 363 - Broadcast News Sports


    Course Description:
    The JOUR 363 option offers learners an opportunity to focus part of their work in the final semester on TV and radio sports. Learners are assigned shifts as TV Sports Anchor, Radio Sports Desker and Sports Reporter. The radio sportscaster may also write and present farm news in the course of a day of radio coverage. JOUR 363 works in conjunction with the corequisite courses toward the production of “Newsfile”, a half-hour TV newscast produced three days a week, as well as radio news and sports production on SAIT campus radio station four days a week.

  • JOUR 365 - Broadcast News TV News III


    Course Description:
    The primary objective of JOUR 365 is to give learners enrolled in this option practice in the day-to-day process of producing television news. The course is almost entirely tutorial in nature and involves the actual production of a half-hour TV news broadcast, which is recorded live-to-tape. Learners perform each of four roles in television news production, Assignment Editor, News Anchor, Weather Anchor, and News Producer. They are expected to carry out the positions to which they are assigned with frequent assistance and critique from the instructor on the first day, much less on the second day, and on their own the third day.

    Course Description:
    This course introduces the second year photo major to advanced location lighting concepts and practices as they relate to photojournalism. Students will gain experience using artificial light sources to photograph individuals, and small groups on location and in the studio to create impactful and storytelling images. Environmental (journalistic) portraiture is emphasized, however studio portraiture will also be covered. The course provides the important element of practical experience through lighting workshops, seminars, and lectures, in-studio but predominantly on location.

    Course Description:
    This advanced level course will round out the visual journalists’ skills sets, and focuses on long form visual storytelling in today’s news media. The course takes a documentary-style approach to visual storytelling, and includes all aspects of photojournalism as it pertains to still photography, and videography, and how these two mediums are combined with other media to tell a story. Proper planning, interviewing techniques, camera handling, audio acquisition, video editing and sequencing will be covered in depth, with the final assignment to encompass all of the skill sets discussed in this course. Today’s photojournalist must balance the necessity of gathering still images, text, audio and video for multiple platforms. Learning how to achieve this balance will be a major focus of this course.
