PHOT 366 - Visual Journalism IV Course Description: This advanced course builds on the fundamentals of documentary photojournalism acquired in PHOT 336, and explores both video and still imagery as a form of storytelling for an online audience. This is a project-oriented course which allows the learner to combine their journalistic and creative skills to tell compelling and poignant stories visually. Although video is emphasized in this course, students will not be restricted to one visual medium, and in fact will be encouraged to combine both mediums in an appropriate manner for their final project.

PRAC 391 - Broadcast News Practicum Course Description: PRAC 391 is primarily a four-week, “real-world” experiential course conducted off campus at a participating radio or television newsroom. It provides learners with a realistic taste of what working in the industry is like. Practicums are typically done in the areas of radio reporting and writing, television reporting, television production assistance, and public affairs research. Since every practicum is individually arranged, and usually takes place somewhere other than Calgary, the course is conducted on an individual contract basis between the student, SAIT, and the host station supervisor at the participating station.

PRAC 392 - Library Practicum Course Description: This course provides learners with a total of six weeks of practical work experience. PRNT 260 - Digital Image Production II Course Description: Digital Image Production II provides learners with hands on experience using digital image capture devices and industry standard software to produce files for use in the graphic communications industry. PROJ 216 - Software Project Concepts Course Description: This course familiarizes learners with software projects, discussing project definition, management, control, and other issues. Learners explore project management tools and methods, and business documents such as the request for proposal, project proposal, and project plan. Participants are introduced to the Software Development Lifecycle, exploring alternative lifecycle models, and team development with agile and extreme programming methods. Object Oriented design is explored through the use of UML diagramming techniques.

PROJ 318 - Journalism Projects I Course Description: Journalism Projects I is the first of two capstone courses in the Journalism program. It brings together elements from all of the basic skill areas taught in the program, and asks students to apply those in a setting that closely simulates a working newsroom environment. Students will be evaluated on all important aspects of their work in the production cycle, over several editions of the program newspaper, and maintenance of the paper’s news website.

SYST 300 - Acoustic and Audio Systems Course Description: Learners will be introduced to the principles of sound as a transmission media. They will gain an understanding of the perception of sound and the aspect of hearing (psychoacoustics). Physical factors of acoustics in room construction and design will be analyzed, including reverberation. Topics covered include: audio signal processing, broadcast camera audio set-up, and an examination of microphone and loudspeaker transducer theory. SYST 365 - Broadcast Video Equipment Course Description: This course will introduce advanced concepts of video encoders, UDH-TV, SVIP (Studio Video over IP), cameras, system infrastructure, server recording and playback, and switching. The learner will gain a more in-depth understanding of component analog, digital formats, and system challenges such as Aspect Ratio and Timecode. Topics include compression standards, 4K, HDR, HFR WCG, digital glue, colour camera systems beginning with optics and distribution, and monitoring digital signals within the plant. Through the lab component learners will explore compression with a focus on MPEG as applied to digital video, video online editing systems, processing video for routing, SDI testing, and transport stream analysis to complement the theory provided in SYST-305 and SYST-365.
