HSCI 102 - Ophthalmic Assistant I


Course Description
Ophthalmic Assistant 1 is the first of two courses offered that provides learners with necessary background knowledge to be a successful ophthalmic assistant. Starting with general and ocular anatomy and physiology, the emphasis then shifts to ophthalmic skills including visual assessment, history taking, tonometry and lensometry. Building blocks to ophthalmic skills will be discussed in basic optics and basic pharmacology will be discussed. The course is rounded-out with health and safety best practices.

This course addresses the entry-level competencies identified in the Canadian Society of Ophthalmic Medical Personnel (CSOMP) and the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) certification content areas.

Additional Requisite Information:
All candidates must be employed by an ophthalmologist. A written statement from the ophthalmologist on company letterhead must be sent to advising@sait.ca, along with your registration. You must also continue employment with the ophthalmologist for the duration of the program. Learners have 24 weeks to complete this course from the day they register.
