PTPR 117 - Applied Nitrogen Science Course Description This Applied Nitrogen Science course provides you with the fundamental knowledge required to understand the various applications of cryogenic and compressed Nitrogen (N2) in oil and gas well drilling operations, well completions and interventions, as well as in facility commissioning and maintenance operations. With the global petroleum industry’s rapidly growing use of long reach horizontal wells and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, the need for high rate N2 pumping services has greatly increased, as has the necessity for technical, engineering, and operating personnel to better understand N2 applications for safety, cost, and time efficiency.
You will review the basic laws of gases and phase behaviour then proceed in logical progression through N2 manufacturing, marketing and transport logistics including the pertinent safety considerations. The process, function and operation of the latest generation of fired and non-fired nitrogen pumpers will be detailed. The core of the course deals with specific applications in underbalanced drilling, well completions and well interventions, plus basic volumetric and hydrostatic calculations particular to N2 applications in the upstream oil industry.
