PWEN 008 - Third Class Power Engineering Practicum


Course Description
The Third Class Power Engineering Practicum will provide students with the opportunity to be trained in a First Class power plant as an Assistant Shift Engineer. Operating Experience will include duties and tasks such as, but not limited to:

  • Learning safe operating principles and practices as applied in an operating power plant,
  • Preparation of line drawings for all power plant processes,
  • Identification of HVAC equipment across the campus,
  • Monitoring of power plant boilers, pumps, fans, motors, compressors, heat & energy transfer and water treatment equipment,
  • Testing of boiler water, condensate, feedwater and cooling water,
  • Operation, maintenance and cleaning of power plant equipment,
  • Recording of operating and maintenance data,
  • Learning shift operating strategies and techniques and
  • And performing other tasks and duties relevant to the operation of a First Class power plant.

Upon successful completion of the Practicum, students will receive three months credit for Operating Experience as an Assistant Shift Engineer in a First Class Power Plant on an AB-66(a).

Please note that this is an unpaid practicum and students must go through an interview process.  SAIT will inform the student of his/her selection in the practicum upon successful completion of the interview process.

Students are required to take a Safety Orientation course (SAFE-160) prior to the first day.

Additional Requisite Information:
This course is for any certified Fourth Class Power Engineer who has passed all of the Third Class Power Engineering exams, requires three months Operating Experience for ABSA Third Class certification and is accepted in the interview process for this practicum.  Students taking the Power Engineering Technology Diploma program may also apply.  Please note that students who have taken a Third Class Power Engineering course in a stand-alone program are not qualified to register at this time.
