CHEM 280 - Water Chemistry Course Description This course will provide an understanding of the chemical principles behind the unit process operations used in SAGD water treatment. Topics studied include: Water usage, key water parameters, sample collection and preservation, analysis techniques, interferences, QA/QC considerations, chemical handling, de-oiling, skim tanks, gas flotations cells, filtration processes, coagulation, flocculation, settling, alkalinity and pH, hardness, scaling, oxidation-reduction chemistry, lime softening, silica removal, ion exchange, evaporators, and boiler water chemistry. This course will be supported by a hands-on water treatment lab. The learner will be able to apply an understanding of water chemistry to make recommendations for the control of SAGD water treatment processes.
