TECH 280 - Gibson Hardisty Lab Tech 1

Course Description
Petroleum laboratory technologists (Lab Tech 1) work in high-volume oil production / refinery or pipeline company laboratories, as well as in research labs and for scientific supply companies. Hydrocarbon laboratory technologists work in laboratory environments where they may spend a considerable amount of time standing or sitting and performing tasks that may be repetitive. They must observe safety precautions to reduce the risk of exposure to dangerous chemical liquids and vapors. This modular training is also an excellent professional development opportunity for individuals working in various laboratory roles, who require an understanding of selective aspects of oil and gas production, refining and pipeline operations.

Topics include:

Quality Control, Acids, Bases, and Salts, Balancing Acid-Base and Combustion, Phase Behaviour of Mixtures, Phase Behaviour of Pure Substances, pH Measurement and Calculations, Basic Concepts about Matter, Chemical Bonding Concepts, Potential Environmental Impact of Operating Facilities, Potential Environmental Impacts of Liquids, Potential Environmental Impacts of Vapours, Introduction to Spill Containment and Control, Introduction to Instrumentation, Fractionation Equipment, Fractionation Operational Procedures, Fractionation Systems, Fractionation Tower and Tray Design, Chemical Inhibition and Solvents, Emulsions and Treatment, Applied Hydrocarbon Chemistry, The Cost and Effects of Workplace Injuries, Gas Detection Equipment, Introduction to Emergency Response/Contingency Planning, Introduction to Water Impurities and Treatment
