PETR 164 - Intro to Thermal & SAGD Tech Course Description This introductory course introduces you to basic thermal theory and terminology, and demonstrates how these principles are implemented to increase reservoir temperature and promote production. Steamflooding, Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS), Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) and in-situ combustion all utilize the same thermal principles but employ different drilling and recovery techniques. This course promotes a comparative view of the strengths and failures of current as well as developing technologies. A general understanding of thermal heavy oil technology will provide you with insight into both the present and the future of Alberta’s oil and gas industry.
