INSP 118 - Ultrasonics Level I Theory


Course Description:
This ultrasonics theory course for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) examines fundamental properties of sounds, wave propagation, generation of ultrasonic waves, test equipment and test methods. Instruction is provided in calibration, performance tests, weld inspection, specification and result interpretation.

Prerequisite(s):
  • One of:
    • CODE 118
    • CODE 270
    • EXAM 109

Required Materials
Students must have successfully completed Grade 10 Math or equivalent.

If students cannot produce credentials to demonstrate math proficiency, they must write the Math 10-C exam at SAIT. To book this test, please contact the SAIT Testing Centre at testing@sait.ca.

The online format of D2L gives the Learner the opportunity to discuss important issues, access websites and review materials covered in the course. This course is the first part of the required 40 hours of training per the NRCan guidelines. To be certified under the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) certification scheme students need to take the 16 hour hands-on component INSP-117 separately.

If you are not able to complete the online course within the allotted 6 weeks you have the option to purchase an Extension. An extension must be purchased 2 business days before your course end date.

  • Course equivalencies taken at other institutions will be accepted but prospective students must contact the NDT department for approvals.
  • Pre-requisites are subject to change at the discretion of the accreditation body.
