LDSH 167 - Leading with Goals

Course Description:
Over 50 years of studies related to goal setting largely support how critical goals are to successful leadership. A close look at the anatomy of successful leadership often reveals a leader intent on a very specific goal. Goals are the bedrock of a leader’s ambition, aspiration, design, intent, and purpose. They can be motivational to individuals, a group, or an organization. It’s almost as if there is magic in goals, something inexplicable, but highly powerful. Psychologists understand how this leadership dynamic works, because they understand just how goal-oriented human beings are. Goals that have some degree of difficulty, are specific rather than general, and result in concrete rewards that motivate people can be powerful motivators for excellence. In recent years, however, researchers are also considering the pitfalls and detrimental effects of intentional focus on goal setting and goals. The unit includes readings that present both of these perspectives.
