CSTN 008 - Power Tools for Homeowners


Course Description:
This course introduces students to the most common portable and stationary tools used by Do-It-Yourselfers to complete general home repairs and renovations.  The course will explain what each tool is specifically designed to do, their limitations, features to look for when purchasing them, how to set them up and maintain them, how to use them properly and safely, and how to maximize their usefulness.

Tools to be discussed: 

  • Table Saw/Blades
  • Jig Saw/Blades
  • Router and Laminate Trimmer
  • Reciprocating Saw/Blades
  • Brad Nailer/Compressor
  • Circular Saw/Blades
  • Compound Mitre Saw/Blades
  • Belt Sander/Belts
  • Random-Orbit Sander/Sanding Grit/Discs

Hands-on projects/activities include:

  • Practicing the use of all tools covered in the course
  • Changing a blade on a table saw, jig saw, reciprocating saw, portable power saw, and router (bits and collet)
  • Tips for making useful jigs
  • Constructing a basic but highly functional toolbox using the power tools covered in the course

Technical Requirements
  • Learners will be responsible for providing their own Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved safety boots.
  • Learners must provide their own 8m/26ft tape measure (metric required).
  • Safety glasses will be provided by SAIT.
