MAPS 251 - Geographic Information Systems / Geomatics I Description This course provides an introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Geospatial concepts, focusing on the use of Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems (RPAS) for mapping and data collection. Students will explore the fundamentals of spatial data types such as vectors and rasters, and develop skills in geospatial data management. The course will cover cartographic principles through the creation of mission maps and how to use this data for RPAS mission planning. Core topics include coordinate systems, data integration, and mapping software tools. By working with data collected from RPAS missions, students will learn how to convert flight data into actionable spatial information for applications like land use planning, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure management.
