Whether you’re a city planner, architect, engineer, general contractor, design-builder, or anyone interested in accessibility, becoming an RHFAC Professional will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills needed to rate a building or site for overall accessibility of the built environment.
The Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ (RHFAC) program helps improve the accessibility of the built environment. RHFAC is a comprehensive rating system that measures the accessibility of buildings and sites and promotes increased access through the adoption of Universal Design principles. This program is the only one in Canada using a rating system to identify and certify accessible built environments based on a consistent methodology.
Learn about meaningful access in the built environment and become qualified to conduct RHFAC ratings by obtaining an RHFAC designation.
How to earn an RHFAC Professional Designation
- Pass the RHFAC Accessibility Assessor Training Course at SAIT. This course includes both classroom instruction and field experience.
- Pass the RHFAC Professional Exam administered by the CSA Group. Note that this exam is not administered as part of this course and can not be taken at SAIT.

Course Description
This course combines theory and hands-on practice to train individuals who are planning, designing, and constructing the built environment to understand accessibility from the perspective of people with disabilities and measure the accessibility of venues. You will learn how to deliver consistent, professional site evaluations that determine the level of access for people with disabilities.

Prerequisite Note:
The RHFAC Accessibility Assessor Training Course requires that you provide proof of one of the prerequisites listed below.
- A diploma of technology in architecture, engineering, urban planning or a related program - please provide a copy of your diploma or official transcript
- A Journeyman Certificate of Qualification in a designated trade related to building construction - please provide a copy of your Journeyman Certificate of Qualification.
- You are an engineer or are eligible for registration as an engineer - please provide proof of registration or proof of eligibility for registration.
- You are an architect or are eligible for registration as an architect - please provide proof of registration or proof of eligibility for registration.
OR
- You have a minimum of five years’ of experience related to building construction - please provide a resume specifically outlining your experience.
In addition to your education or experience,
- You have a high level of proficiency with computer systems and programs, including MS Excel, as well as solid written and verbal communication skills - proof not required.

Delivery Format
The course is delivered both in the classroom and in the field. It runs over two non-consecutive four-day sessions, for a total of eight days or 48 lesson hours.
