Red Cross Swim lessons

Swim Lessons - Preschool Parented Classes ages 4 - 36 months


These classes are for toddlers and their parent or caregiver. The goal of this orientation to water class is to experience buoyancy, movement, entries, songs and play in the water. To enter these levels, your child must be 4 - 36 months and be able to hold their head up.

Starfish


The goals are to help babies experience buoyancy and movement through songs and play in the water and to teach the parent/caregiver age-specific water safety. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up.

Duck


Orientation to water for toddlers and their parent/caregiver. Swimmers learn how to use floating objects for support and explore different water movements through games, songs and active water play.

Sea Turtle


Orientation to water for toddlers and their parent/caregiver. Swimmers learn through fun games and songs, how to combine sills, how to kick with a buoyant object and how to perform basic floats, glides and kicks.

Swim Lessons - Preschool Non-parented classes Ages 3 - 5


The child is with the instructor for the entire class. Children move from one level to the next based on what skills they have completed. At the end of each session every child will receive a progress card as to which level to register in next.

Sea Otter


This is a transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of the instructor. All skills are assisted by the instructor. Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop floats and glides and swim 1m.

Salamander


Swimmers learn to swim 2m, further develop basic floats, increase distance on front and back glides, front swim, roll - over glides and learn how to use a personal floatation device (PFD).

Sunfish


Swimmers learn to swim 5m, increase their distance using buoyant objects, increase front and back glides with kick. Swimmers also develop their front glide, back glide, and roll - over glide as well as front swims. They also learn deep water skills using a personal flotation device (PFD).

Crocodile


Swimmers learn to swim 5m on their front and back, perform dolphin kick and begin using rhythmic breathing. They also progress with kicking drills and increase their swimming to 10m. Skills include jumping into deep water, performing surface support for 10 seconds and using a personal flotation device.

Whale


Swimmers perform a front and back swim for 10m. Swimmers work on developing their flutter kick and build endurance through a 15m swim. They improve their safety skills with a 20 second surface support, throwing assists and sitting dives.

Kids Swim Lessons - Levels 1-10, Ages 6 and up


Swim Kids 1


Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides, and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

Swim Kids 2


Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and 10m distance swim.

Swim Kids 3


This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about when and where to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.

Swim Kids 4


This level introduces the front crawl (10m), and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self - safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

Swim Kids 5


This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, and whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

Swim Kids 6


This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m) and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), ice safety and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1.5 minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

Swim Kids 7


This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m), and elementary backstroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

Swim Kids 8


This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, and the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

Swim Kids 9


This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary backstroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m) and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 minutes). They also work on head - first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and ice self-rescue. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.

Swim Kids 10


This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary backstroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head - first and feet - first surface dives. Endurance is built using dolphin kick and a 500m swim.

Tri Kids Training


This program consists of swimming, cycling, and running. Participants will gain the skills, core strength and endurance to prepare them for a triathlon race for their age group. Pre-requisites: Red Cross Swim Kids 5 or the ability to swim 50m continuously.

Adult Swim Lessons


Red Cross Swim Basics


Introduces the fundamental skills required to build swimming proficiency. This course is for those who have no or limited swimming experience.

Red Cross Swim Basics 2.0


Take your introductory level swim class to the next level. Swim Strokes progression is emphasized, while improving your front crawl and back crawl.

Red Cross Swim Strokes


Designed to further develop strokes chosen by the swimmer and increase swimming distances and proficiency. This course is for those who have completed Red Cross Swim Basics or who can swim but would like to improve on technique, speed and endurance.

Prerequisite: the ability to swim 50m continuously on your front and/or back and a willingness to increase your comfort in deep water.

Red Cross Private Swim Lessons


Private swim lessons are available for all ages and skill levels. Lessons are geared toward those who would like more one - on - one attention to improve their skills.

Canadian Swim Patrol


The Canadian Swim Patrol program is the on - ramp to lifeguarding. The Swim Patrol provides enriched training for those who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim. Swim Patrol’s three levels - Rookie, Ranger, and Star continue to develop participant’s swim strokes and provide the skill foundation that prepares them for success in the Bronze medal awards.

Rookie Patrol:


Swimmers continue stroke development with 50m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Lifesaving sport skills include a 25m obstacle swim and 15m object carry. First aid focuses on assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS and treatment for bleeding. Fitness improves in 350m workouts and 100m timed swims.

Ranger Patrol:


Swimmers develop better strokes over 75m swims of each stroke. They tackle Lifesaving sport skills in a lifesaving medley, timed object support and rescue with a buoyant aid. First aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock and obstructed airway procedures. Skill drills develop a strong lifesaving foundation.

Star Patrol:


Swimmers are challenged with 600m workouts, 300m timed swims and a 25m object carry. Strokes are refined over 100m swims. First aid focuses on treatment of bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies including asthma and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defense methods, victim removals and rolling over and supporting a victim face up in shallow water.
