Program Description


In today’s fast-changing global business environment, an understanding of the legal requirements is critical for managers to ensure a productive and positive work place. This program is designed for professionals who manage and hire staff, or who want to improve relationships with HR and legal departments. Through case studies and analysis, SAIT’s Employment Law program provides a thorough understanding of the laws, regulations and standards applicable to management. The modules will emphasize employment standards, privacy and human rights legislation, and offer an overview of labour relations and Occupational Health and Safety. This program is not meant as a substitute for legal advice and should not be considered as such.

Credential


After successfully completing this program, learners will receive an Employment Law Certificate of Completion.

Progression


You have up to five years to complete all certificate courses. You must meet the graduation requirements as they exist at the time you register for your first course (see AC.3.1.1 Grading and Progression).

Admission Requirements


There are no entrance requirements for this program. You can begin registering for courses anytime by clicking a course name or calling 403.284.7248. Once you have registered for at least one course and have a SAIT student ID number, consider filling out and submitting the Program Declaration Form to the Office of the Registrar. Contact information for the Office of the Registrar is located in the upper corner of the form.

  2. Explain the legal safeguards that provide employees a minimum standard of treatment.
  3. Assess the key common law issues related to hiring and the employment relationship.
  4. Outline the legal requirements of an employment contract.
  5. Discover how human rights legislation impacts employment.
  6. Explain the legal safeguards of health and safety in the workplace.
  7. Develop best practices that protect personal information and privacy rights in the workplace.
  8. Assess policies, practices and procedures for compliance and limiting employer liability.
  9. Distinguish the various ways that the employment relationship may end.
  10. Distinguish between unionized and non-unionized employees.
