Gas Turbine Technician

Ready to launch your career in the fast-growing aerospace and energy industries? This one-year Gas Turbine Technician certificate offers hands-on training experience that will equip you with the skills to inspect, repair and maintain gas turbine engines used in both the aviation and industrial sectors. 

In this program, you will: 

  • train in world-class hangars and labs at both SAIT’s main campus and the Art Smith Aero Centre
  • work on both aviation and industrial turbine systems while gaining the technical and theoretical expertise of both small and large engine systems and the human factors in maintenance, regulatory airworthiness and advanced diagnostic and inspection practices
  • work with cutting-edge technology and learn how to troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, balance and test gas turbine engines-vital skills for maintaining the sophisticated engines that power modern aviation and energy systems. 

Developed in partnership with local industry leaders, this program ensures you graduate with skills and certifications that align with industry needs.

Whether you’re interested in working with airlines, power generation companies or engineering firms, this program provides you with a well-rounded education to enter high-demand roles and entrepreneurial opportunities in turbine maintenance services.

As a graduate, you’ll also be prepared for employment in airline maintenance, engine repair facilities, energy providers and industrial service companies.

Credential


Upon successful completion of this program, you’ll receive a SAIT Gas Turbine Technician certificate.

Accepts international applicants - PGWP-eligible


This program accepts international applicants and meets the eligibility criteria for the Post-Graduation Work Permit program, as long as the student is registered in on-campus classes or completes more than 50% of the courses on campus (for blended options). 

International students attending all classes online will NOT be eligible for a Post-Graduate Work Permit. International students are responsible for maintaining their eligibility throughout their studies.

Admission requirements - Applicants educated in Canada


Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency and completion of the following courses or equivalents:

  • a minimum of 50% in English Language Arts 30-1 or English Language Arts 30-2, and
  • a minimum of 50% in Math 30-1 or Math 30-2, and
  • a minimum of 50% in one Grade 12 science course.

SAIT accepts high school course equivalents for admission for applicants educated outside Alberta.

Admission requirements - Applicants educated outside of Canada


All applicants who were educated outside of Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and provide proof they meet the program admission requirements outlined above with an international document assessment. Find accepted educational documents and assessment options

SAIT may also accept courses completed at certain international post-secondary institutions.

Program outline


The Gas Turbine Technician requires 30 credits (10 courses) to complete.

The program spans one year, with two semesters per year.

We recommend you complete the courses in the order listed below.

Progression


You must attain a PGPA and/or a CGPA of 2.0 or better each semester and pass the prerequisite courses to progress through the program.

To qualify for graduation, you must pass all courses, attain a CGPA of 2.0 or better and complete course requirements within the prescribed timelines.

Books and supplies are approximately $1000 - $1500 per full-time year.

This is a bring-your-own-device program with a standard computer hardware and software requirement. See the specific requirements on our computers and laptops page.

Find your booklist on the SAIT Bookstore’s website. The booklist will be available close to your start date. Can’t find your program or course? The bookstore didn’t receive a textbook list. Contact your program directly to determine if they’re still refining course details or if you’re in luck; no textbook purchase is required for that term.
